Every company, whether it’s new or old, large or small has a story to tell. Websites and social media pages give companies an unprecedented opportunity to tell their story. If you’re just getting started in your business then you have the opportunity to tell people about your new business, why you’re passionate about it, what makes you different, and what you hope to accomplish in the future. If you own an established business, use your loyal customers to your advantage by asking them to tell your story through testimonials, interviews and real world examples of how they use your products or services.
A simple example of using your customers to tell your story would be P90X the fitness program you see advertised in infomercials all the time. P90X infomercials talk about the program, but what they really emphasize is their customers. In the infomercials they feature customers clearly talking about and using their products. The spotlighted customers tell you how P90X has changed their lives. Of course, it makes a powerful testimonial but it also makes a great company story. Who better to tell the P90X company story than the people who’s lives have been drastically changed?
Stories are told in many different ways. From social media, to the pages on your website, to a image filled video, you have options. Remember that your story isn’t just a couple of paragraphs and you’re done. Your story is always evolving.
I’ll give you an example of something we plan on doing. We are in the process of redesigning our own website, so we can display and demonstrate what our company is really capable of doing. One thing we realized in analyzing our current website is the fact that we really don’t tell our own story very well. Our story is about our team and not just about the company. When we design a website or print pieces for clients, the client will work with our creative director and one of our designers to complete the project. The same is true for our social media and search marketing specialists. Our clients often will have a lot of contact with them as well. Our story is our team, and our marketing efforts display that as such.
One of the most popular pages on a website is the About Us page. The reason for this is because people want to know who they are working with. In networking a common theme is that people buy from those they know, like, and trust. If you tell your story the right way then people will come to know you. After that you just need to nail down the like and trust factors.
